Q: What is psychological therapy?

Psychological therapy (often referred to as “talking therapy”) is an evidence based approach to exploring any problems or difficulties in your life and uses proven psychological approaches to help improve your situation. Our chosen approaches have been selected based on the science behind them and effectiveness in clinical practice. As such, a range of psychological therapies, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), solution focussed, counselling, family therapy, mindfulness and positive psychology, are offered at our clinic.

These approaches are readily available and are provided by our qualified and registered Clinical Psychologists who are fully trained and experienced in working with problems such as stress and anxiety (including panic attacks, phobias, shyness, worry, and OCD), insomnia, depression, low self-esteem, managing physical pain, trauma, and loss and bereavement

Clients can expect a non-judgemental and confidential service, using an approach that is tailored and unique to you. Gosforth Physiotherapy and Wellness pride ourselves on the quality of our services with all our clinicians continuing to develop their own practice so as to be able to offer the most effective evidence-based psychological treatments available to you.

Q: Are your therapists/Clinical Psychologists qualified?


Dr Stuart Sadler qualified with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Newcastle University in 2007 and, since then, has continued with further training in neuropsychology (attaining his post-graduate diploma from Glasgow University in 2012), family and solution-focussed therapies, and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). Stuart is experienced in working with adults of all ages, is fully registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and adheres to the codes of conduct set out by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and HCPC.

Dr Steph Hellawell received her PhD in Psychology (post-traumatic stress) and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from London University in 2000 and 2002. She has continued with further training in child and adolescent psychotherapy, attaining her Diploma in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy from the Northern Guild in Newcastle upon Tyne in 2010.

Q: How many sessions does it take to feel better?

This varies from person to person as everyone’s situation and circumstances are individual. Some people report feeling better after the first session, whereas others find that there is a cumulative benefit from attending a block of sessions.

We pride ourselves on working to the highest ethical standards and will only offer services if we feel psychological therapy might be helpful.

Q: Do I have to tell my doctor I am seeing a therapist?

Not unless you feel it would be helpful. Though we are able to write to your GP and/or any other professional at your request, this is not compulsory and only done following discussion with you.

Please keep in mind that should there be any issues of risk or legality, we are legally obliged to inform any agency that might help keep you safe, or protect others. This will be discussed in an open and non-judgemental way when you first meet with our psychologist.

Q: What is Life Coaching?

Life coaching recognises that modern life can come with its own set of difficulties. Some people find themselves unsure of what they want in life, working jobs they don’t enjoy, or wanting to make a change but not sure where to start. Life coaching is a way of identifying your values, evaluating your current direction and developing goals and an action plan in order to achieve your goals and become your best self.

At Gosforth Physiotherapy and Wellness, our approach to life coaching makes use of techniques similar to those found in psychological therapy (our life coaching services are provided by a qualified and registered Clinical Psychologist) and as such can help build confidence, overcome difficulties and improve the way you approach life as well as motivate and inspire to push yourself to achieve the life you deserve.

We offer a four session life coaching programme which helps you evaluate all areas of your life, including (though not limited to) physical and psychological health, career, hobbies, friendships, relationships and money. From this, we help you identify your attitudes and values and develop a collaborative and bespoke action plan congruent with your goals.

Previous clients have found that life coaching opens new directions for them, as well as helping them reflect on what is truly important to them, and how to redirect their life towards it.
