Hypnotherapy is a type of complementary therapy that uses hypnosis as a tool to relax you, by-pass your conscious mind and work directly with your sub-conscious mind in order to bring about positive changes that you wish for yourself.
Perhaps you have decided to free yourself from a phobia, or to quit an old habit (such as smoking) that does not work for you any more.
Perhaps you wish to relieve anxiety or stress, or improve your confidence and assertiveness.
You might be searching for a way to deal with pain, or need some help in tackling weight loss.
In all these cases, hypnotherapy – practised by a skilled and qualified therapist – can help you transform your outlook on life and encourage new, positive habits at work, at home or during your leisure time.
How does hypnotherapy work?
Hypnosis works by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right-hand side is made more alert.
The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the subconscious mind awoken. Since the subconscious mind is a more instinctive, deeper-seated, force than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for a patient’s behaviour and physical state to alter.
For example, someone who consciously wants to overcome their fear of spiders may try everything they consciously can to do it, but will still fail as long as their subconscious mind retains this terror and prevents them from succeeding. Progress can only be made be re-programming the subconscious so that deep-seated instincts and beliefs are abolished or altered.
Hypnotherapy sessions: what to expect
First of all, you will be offered a free telephone consultation which gives you an opportunity to ask more questions.
You and your therapist will discuss and discover how can you can be helped to reach your desired outcome. This consultation is very important as trust and comfort are absolutely vital.
During therapy sessions you will be fully in control – and when in hypnosis, your mind will only accept suggestions that are in line with your own desired outcomes and goals. You can easily bring yourself out of hypnosis if at any time.
Every session is person-centred, unique and tailor-made just for you.
How many sessions are needed? And how long do they last?
The aim is to have as few sessions as possible but this, of course, always depends on the issue you are working to address. As a rough guide, the number of sessions most people need usually varies between 2 and 5 – and each session lasts for 2 hours.
