Newcastle chiropodistChiropody is a specialist type of healthcare that focuses on the care, maintenance and treatment of foot and lower limb conditions (‘chiro’ means ‘to use the hands to heal’ – and ‘pod’ means foot; hence we get the word ‘chiropodist’).

Our resident foot specialist is a member of the United Kingdom’s Society of Chiropodists & Podiatrists as well as fully qualified and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Chiropodist or Podiatrist?

What is the difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist?  This is a common source of confusion, but the truth is that a chiropodist and a podiatrist are the same thing. Simply put, chiropodists and podiatrists are both foot specialist. They typically have the same skills and qualifications.

Chiropodists / podiatrists are healthcare professionals who have been trained to diagnose and treat abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. They can also treat and alleviate day-to-day foot problems, including: toenail problems, such as thickened toenails, fungal nail infections or ingrown toenails. corns and calluses, all of which can have the secondary effect of preventing you from being able to maintain and improve your fitness, as  many  forms of exercise involve being on your feet!

What happens when I come to you for my treatment?

At your first consultation, your chiropodist will take a full medical history and carry out some appropriate basic tests – for example, checking your blood circulation and sensations in your feet.

Your chiropodist may also want to look at the way you walk and stand and will assess the movement in the joints of your foot and ankle. We always take time to discuss any concerns you may have, and we follow up with a clear diagnosis and a bespoke treatment plan.

Your chiropodist then tends to your feet gently and painlessly, and this results in immediate improvements in pain, discomfort and cosmetic appearance.
Your treatment session then ends with a therapeutic foot massage, and we also give you appropriate advice as well as answering any other questions you might have.

Our treatment sessions usually take between 30 – 45 minutes -and please bring a list of any medications your GP has prescribed to you when you come for your first appointment.
