Post-Operative Rehabilitation Newcastle

Our physiotherapists provide post-operative rehabilitation, helping you rebuild strength, restore movement & recover following surgery.

Recovering well from surgery requires more than rest. The quality of your rehabilitation in the weeks and months following an operation has a direct impact on how fully and how quickly you recover, how well you regain strength and movement, and whether complications such as stiffness, weakness or persistent pain develop.

Our expert physiotherapists at Gosforth Physio & Wellness provide specialist post-operative rehabilitation for a wide range of surgical procedures. We work closely with your surgical team to ensure your recovery is structured, progressive and tailored to your specific operation, your body and your goals.

Post-Operative Rehab Newcastle

We begin by understanding your procedure, your surgeon's protocols and your current level of function. From there we build a structured rehabilitation programme that progresses at the right pace, protecting the surgical repair while steadily restoring strength, movement and confidence.

Treatment begins as soon as you are ready, and we monitor your progress closely at every stage. Our goal is to get you back to the activities that matter to you, whether that is returning to work, driving, sport or simply managing daily life independently, as safely and efficiently as possible.

What Conditions Do We Rehab?

We provide post-operative rehabilitation following a wide range of orthopaedic and soft tissue procedures, including:

  • Total hip replacement and hip resurfacing
  • Total knee replacement
  • ACL reconstruction and knee ligament surgery
  • Rotator cuff repair and shoulder surgery
  • Back and spinal surgery

If your procedure is not listed, get in touch. We treat a wide range of surgical cases and will confirm whether we can support your recovery.

Why Post-Operative Physiotherapy Matters

Surgery repairs or replaces a damaged structure, but it does not rebuild the strength, movement and neuromuscular control that are lost through the period of pain, inactivity and the operation itself. Without structured rehabilitation, patients frequently experience prolonged recovery, persistent stiffness, muscle weakness and a reduced return to function even after technically successful surgery.

Physiotherapy-led rehabilitation addresses all of these factors systematically, giving you the best possible outcome from your procedure.

What to Expect

Every post-operative rehab programme includes a thorough initial assessment, a clear explanation of your recovery timeline, and a structured progressive programme that adapts as you improve. We liaise with your surgical team where needed and can arrange further imaging privately if required at any stage.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation FAQs

When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
This depends on your procedure and your surgeon's protocol. Some patients begin within days of surgery, others after a short period of rest and healing. We work within your surgical team's guidelines and will advise you on the right time to start based on your specific operation.

Do I need a referral from my surgeon?
No, you can book directly. However, if your surgeon has provided post-operative protocols or discharge notes, please bring these to your first appointment as they help us plan your rehabilitation appropriately.

Can you work alongside my NHS physiotherapy?
Yes. If you are receiving NHS physiotherapy but want additional sessions to accelerate your recovery, we can work alongside your existing care. We will not duplicate assessments unnecessarily and will focus on progressing your rehabilitation.

How long does post-operative rehabilitation take?
Recovery timelines vary significantly depending on the procedure. Minor soft tissue surgery may require a few weeks of structured rehabilitation, while joint replacement or ligament reconstruction typically requires several months of progressive work. We will give you a realistic timeline at your first appointment.

What if I am recovering slower than expected?
We monitor your progress at every session. If your recovery is not progressing as expected, we will investigate further, adapt your programme, liaise with your surgical team, or arrange imaging if needed. Slow progress is always investigated, not ignored.

Is it too late to start physiotherapy if I had surgery months ago?
No. Many patients come to us weeks or months after surgery having not received adequate rehabilitation. It is rarely too late to make meaningful improvements to strength, movement and function.

Better by 5

Over 90% of our patients get 'Better by 5' sessions.

If you need any of our physiotherapy, sports injury, sports massage or acupuncture services, you should see and feel a real difference by the end of your fifth session.

If there is no improvement in your clinical condition or in the way you feel we STOP after the fifth session. We reassess the reasons why there has been no apparent improvement and, if necessary, we can organise scans and letters to GPs and Consultants. You can be sure that we will never continue treating you unless there is a positive benefit – and only when you (and we) agree on your treatment plan.
