An ACL injury can be a significant setback, whether you are a competitive athlete or simply someone who wants to stay active. Pain, instability and loss of confidence in the knee can make walking, sport and everyday activities difficult, and without the right treatment, the risk of further injury or long-term problems increases.
Our expert Newcastle physiotherapists provide specialist assessment and treatment for ACL injuries at every stage, from initial diagnosis and conservative management through to pre-surgical preparation and return to sport. We build a structured, progressive programme tailored to your injury, your lifestyle and your goals.
ACL Physiotherapy Newcastle
We begin with a thorough assessment of your knee stability, strength, movement and function, considering the nature of your injury, any imaging you have had and your personal goals. From this we build a rehabilitation programme that addresses pain and swelling in the early stages, progressively rebuilds strength and stability, and prepares you to return to the activities that matter to you as safely and efficiently as possible.
We monitor your progress closely at every stage and adapt your programme as you improve. Whether your goal is returning to sport, returning to work or simply moving confidently without pain, we build your physiotherapy programme around what matters most to you.
What is an ACL Injury?
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key stabilising ligaments of the knee, running diagonally through the centre of the joint. It controls rotational stability and prevents the shin bone from sliding forward relative to the thigh bone. ACL injuries most commonly occur during sport involving sudden changes of direction, pivoting, landing or direct contact, and range from partial tears to complete ruptures.
Not all ACL injuries require surgery. Many people with partial tears, and some with complete ruptures, can return to full function through structured physiotherapy alone. Whether you are pursuing a surgical or non-surgical pathway, physiotherapy is essential at every stage of recovery.
Types of ACL Injury We Treat
We provide physiotherapy for a range of ACL injuries and presentations, including:
- Partial ACL tears
- Complete ACL ruptures
- ACL injuries with associated meniscus or cartilage damage
- ACL injuries in recreational and competitive athletes
- ACL injuries managed conservatively without surgery
- Pre-surgical ACL rehabilitation (prehab)
Common Challenges After an ACL Injury
Without structured physiotherapy, patients frequently experience persistent knee instability and giving way, along with quadriceps weakness that affects function and increases re-injury risk. Loss of confidence in the knee during sport or demanding activities is common, as is stiffness and reduced range of movement. Compensatory movement patterns that overload other structures can develop over time, and return to sport or physical activity is often significantly prolonged.
Structured physiotherapy addresses each of these directly and significantly improves outcomes, whether you are managing your ACL injury conservatively or preparing for surgery.
